Your Secret Room

Sculleries used to be a thing of the past, but with our busy family lifestyles and the joy of entertaining in our own homes, sculleries have made a come back with full force!

A scullery is a second, smaller kitchen or the backstage to the main kitchen, designed to operate as a preparation, cleaning and storage area. Essentially it’s a place to hide the mess of cooking and entertaining while the show goes on in the main kitchen. It lets you expand the capacity of your kitchen. It makes it easy to keep things looking clean, tidy and calm in the main area.

When choosing to include a scullery in your kitchen design, you need to decide what works for you, how you’re most likely to use it, it’s functions and on what scale. What are you going to do in the scullery? They can vary depending on whatever you need it to be. If you regularly entertain or cook for a large family, you have the budget and can afford the space, you can set your scullery up as a second kitchen with appliances, a sink, dishwasher, and oven.

Maybe your room will merely serve as the preparation area where you keep all your frequently used small appliances and stores. Alternatively, a scullery can be designed to function simply as storage area.

It’s also a great idea to have your coffee machine, toaster or other frequently used appliances in your scullery so the family don’t get under your feet while you’re cooking.

Your new scullery needs to be well connected to the kitchen so you don’t have to walk a million steps to it and back again to the kitchen. It needs to be designed so you can be in the scullery and still be apart of every day living.

Leaving all your gadgets out and in easy reach without cluttering up your kitchen, doing messy prep work in the scullery when you whip up your creations, and just serving in the kitchen is a bonus.

Today’s Kitchens have become a piece of art – a show piece. Designing a scullery is the opportunity to show a little of your personality. Whether you’re a couple that entertains or are feeding a young, growing family, (or maybe just having somewhere quiet to hide away with a cup of tea and a book!) having a scullery is ideal.
